Delhi Jal Board (DJB) today launched a special drive for detecting and preventing leakages to cut down water loss and ensure that city gets sustainable water supply during the summers.
Under its Summer Action Plan for 2015, DJB is focusing on efficient water management by cutting down on water loss as well as contamination due to leakages through.
"Leakage detection thus has two-fold benefits. On the one hand it will cut down on the water loss which will increase water availability for the citizens of Delhi and on the other hand it will also address the issue of water contamination, which is a major concern for DJB," a statement issued by the civic body said.
To achieve this goal, DJB has set up a Leak Detection Investigation Cell which has been given the mandate of detecting surface leakages as well as hidden leakages for the entire city of Delhi, the statement said.
Apart from setting up the special unit, other steps taken by DJB to make the drive effective include providing more man power and latest equipment for detecting hidden leaks.
The staff deployed in the Leak Detection Cell have also been provided intensive training on detecting hidden leakages, it said and added that the city has been divided into sectors having a team each.
"The team will visit their respective pre-notified areas during water supply time in the morning and evening hours to detect surface leakages and will take steps to repair them on the same day. For detecting hidden leakages, the latest equipment shall be procured," the DJB statement said.
"Special focus will be on conducting surveys of the vulnerable areas which are prone to leakages and have already been identified in the Summer Action Plan, 2015," it said and added that "the Cell has been directed to detect all the leakages in their respective areas within next three months. This will also lead to reduction of non-revenue water.
