Urban Development ministry has asked Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) to examine if it can construct an underground metro corridor from Dwarka to Najafgarh instead of an elevated line as per the present plan.
The ministry has received representations from people in the Dwarka area, including those from the area MP Mahabal Mishra, that an elevated line would create much inconvenience as it would result in demolition of shops and buildings.
Officials told PTI that at a meeting held today, top officials of the Urban Development ministry, Delhi government and DMRC deliberated whether the demand to construct an underground corridor was feasible.
Sources said that one of the important factors in taking the decision issue is cost. The construction of elevated corridors is comparatively cheaper than underground tunnel corridors.
In the meeting, Delhi Metro officials suggested that the construction of an underground line was possible but the length would have to be shortened by some distance if cost escalation had to be avoided.
The ministry has now asked DMRC to examine, if it is possible to build an underground line without incurring extra costs, before a final decision is taken.
