With Eid and Independence Day round the corner, a power distribution company has advised people not to fly kite near electricity installations and overhead wires as it may cause tripping.
"Metal coated manjha can lead to tripping and even electrocution. BSES advises Delhiites to be responsible while flying kites and avoid such activities near electricity installations and overhead wires," an official statement said.
The tripping of a single 33/66 KV line can disrupt power supply to over 10,000 consumers. Tripping related outages can take anywhere between 15 minutes to two hours to rectify, it said.
Indians - cutting across religions and regions - celebrate Independence Day by flying kites.
Widespread use of metal coated strings poses a great danger not only to the person flying the kite but also poses a risk to electricity supply of an area as the thread becomes good conductor of electricity.
"Residents are advised not to fly kites near electricity installations, including overhead cables and certainly not use metal coated manjhas. These two simple mantras will ensure safe I-Day and Eid celebrations. Any carelessness can lead to a major power failure, blackout and even electrocution," a BSES spokesperson said.
