"The IMA held a rally at Azad Maidan in south Mumbai against the persistent injustice meted out to the doctors' community, as uncivilised mob is taking law into its hands frequently," the IMA's Maharashtra youth wing chairman Dr Sagar Mundada said.
He said as per the national health profile of 2015, there is only one doctor for every 11,528 patients in the government-run hospitals across the country.
Dr Rohan Mhamunkar, attached to the Hirey Medical College in Dhule, was allegedly bashed by the relatives of the patient, a accident victim, over the course of treatment.
Police had arrested one Pradeep Vetal and eight others in connection with the incident.
Vetal allegedly hanged himself in the toilet of police lock-up in Dhule yesterday.
Condemning the attack, the members of Maharashtra Association of Resident Doctors (MARD) yesterday wore black ribbons on their arms.
