Kanchan Mondal was asked by police officers whether he had signed the death certificate of the 32-year-old deaf and dumb woman Guria, a charge denied by the doctor.

Police officials said CID officers who today started investigating the unnatural death of Guria, an inmate of the Rehabilitation Centre for Mentally Ill Persons (Women), will come to Hooghly tomorrow to investigate the matter.

Altogether ten persons have been arrested in the case till today, whereas the main accused Shyamal Ghosh is still absconding, they said.

The licence of the home run by NGO Dulal Smriti Samsad, was cancelled with retrospective effect from April 1 this year, after it was found that it had expired on March 31.

The authorities of the home had claimed that Guria had been killed when a ceiling fan fell on her head and she was buried after duly obtaining a death certificate.

The body was exhumed after villagers alleged foul play.
