Over 500 junior doctors of Government Medical College and Hospital here (GMC&H) have gone on an indefinite strike after administration failed to take action against an attendant of a patient who had allegedly assaulted a female resident doctor two days ago.
"Two days ago, a female resident doctor was assaulted by an attendant of a patient, we asked the principal and other senior officials of the hospital to file a police complaint against the accused," Dr Neeraj Sharma, working president of the junior resident doctors association told PTI today.
He alleged that as the accused was close to some political leaders and the hospital administration did not file a formal police complaint against him.
"We had given a deadline to file a police complaint to the hospital administration, but when they failed to do so, we went on an indefinite strike from last evening," he said.
Sharma claimed that the accused was a habitual offender as he had attacked another doctor a few weeks ago.
"We work here round the clock to provide succour to the patients, but when our doctors especially female doctors are manhandled what can we do," he said.
Sharma claimed that all junior doctors including Post Graduate Resident doctors and senior resident doctors of the hospital are on strike.
"We will call off the strike only when a formal complaint is registered against the accused and we are assured of the safety and security of the doctors working here," Sharma said.
