About 2,400 private doctors in the city observed a day-long strike today on the call of Uttar Pradesh Indian Medical Association, demanding implementation of Medical Protection Act among other reforms.
The strike went on from 8 AM to 8 PM and doctors didn't treat the OPD patients during this time. Although, treatment was given to the emergency ward patients.
IMA Kanpur President Dr Kiran Pandey and Vice President Dr Praveen Katiyar said their demands include implementation of Medical Protection Act, single window system to address doctor's problems, looking into the matter of several doctors in the state being allegedly arrested and harassed and into suspension of Kanpur Medical College's Dr Arti Lal Cahndani.
The doctors organised a sit-in outside Gandhi Pratima at Phoolbag and submitted a memorandum of demands to the district magistrate.
Government doctors did not participate in the strike as Essential Services Maintenance Act (ESMA) was enforced in the hospitals. However, they wore a black band, showing their support to the protesting doctors.
