A short film on the Kanyashree project of the West Bengal government will be screened today in the documentary section of the 23rd Kolkata International Film Festival.
The 15-minute film - Kanyashree Samman - projects the struggle of 15 young girls from Howrah against adverse circumstances and financial constraints, director Mallika Roychowdhury said.
"The documentary brings to focus the story of girls who have benefitted from the Kanyashree project. The film epitomises women empowerment," she said.
The Kanyashree Prakalpa, launched by the state government in 2013, is a cash transfer scheme aimed at retaining girls in schools and preventing their early marriage.
"I wish to show the film to honourable Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee one day. She received the global recognition for Kanyashree from the UN at The Hague recently and made daughters of Bengal proud," Roychowdhury said.
