They also showed that though IndiGo had the largest market share with 29.1 per cent, national carrier Air India pipped the low cost carrier in terms of passengers load factor (PLF) or occupancy of seats in a flight.
A total of 411.4 lakh passengers flew Indian carriers between January and August, which was an increase of 3.31 per cent on year-on-year basis. Last year, 398.22 lakh passengers flew in the same period.
According to the DGCA data, in August, 52.5 lakh passengers flew against 43.69 lakh last year, which is 20.4 per cent increase on month-on-month basis.
IndiGo may have had the largest market share and witnessed rise in PLF to 76 per cent in August but it was left behind by Air India, which registered a PLF of 78.7 per cent.

According to DGCA, the PLF increased as August witnessed beginning of peak season.
IndiGo remained the leader among the airlines in terms of 'on time performance (OTP)'. It has the OTP of 91.4 per cent, followed by SpiceJet 90.8 per cent, Jet and JetLite combined with 88 per cent, GoAir with 84.8 and Air India with 82 per cent.
Among the foreign airlines, Turkmenistan Airlines had the best OTP (100 per cent), in both arrival and departure category, followed by KLM (100 and 96 per cent).
The DGCA received a total of 590 complaints against various airlines in August, highest being 1.6 per cent against Jet Airways, followed by Air India (1.5 per cent), JetLite (1.4 per cent), SpiceJet (1.2 per cent), IndiGo (0.8) and passengers had least complaints against GoAir (0.4).
