Asserting that values are very important in both professional and personal lives, Reserve Bank Governor Raghuram Rajan has asked students not to take economic freedom for granted.

Rajan was addressing the students of the Dhirubhai Ambani International School's graduation here over the weekend.

"Rajan emphasised on the importance of practising the right values and not to take economic freedom for granted," a statement from the organisers said.

Urging the students to understand and appreciate the role of markets, the academic-turned-central banker said that in a democratic society, money can help provide equal access to opportunities.

Making a case for equity, the Governor said the economic freedom must be utilised for increasing efficiencies and called for "fair" distribution of resources.

"As you embark on careers that are likely to be successful, you should earn by creating perceptible values and equally spend to create value. Your work will be enjoyable, but you will strengthen the economic freedom that we sometimes take for granted," he told the students.

Rajan underscored the need to enjoy the work and asked students not to focus on the end result to make the journey towards it interesting.

Over 100 IB diploma students from the school, located in the BKC business district, graduated at the ceremony.
