After facing flak from the Bombay High Court for its "lethargic" approach towards finalising a site for installation of a doppler radar system, BMC today said its Improvement Committee has sanctioned a place and the proposal would be placed before the general body for final approval tomorrow.
A division bench of Chief Justice Manjula Chellur and Justice M S Sonak had on the last two hearings come down heavily on the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) for dragging its feet in the matter and not finalising the site despite several orders of the court.
The court had then directed the civic chief Ajoy Mehta to appear before it during hearing of the PIL filed by advocate Atal Bihari Dubey on the heavy rains that brought Mumbai to a halt in June this year.
On the last hearing, Mehta informed the court that the the Improvement Committee would have to first grant sanction, after which the proposal would be placed before the General Body for final approval. The court had then said the process would have to be completed expeditiously considering the seriousness of the issue.
BMC counsel S U Kamdar today informed the court that the Improvement Committee had in its meeting held on December 3 granted its sanction for a doppler radar system to be set up in suburban Goregaon. "The proposal would be placed before the General Body which is scheduled to meet tomorrow," he said.
The court then posted the petition for further hearing next week.
While there is one doppler radar system in Colaba weather station, a state government-appointed committee had recommended setting up another such system in suburban Mumbai.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) had identified three sites for construction of the system, but the civic body had not granted its approval to hand over the land.
