Congress today attacked Chief Ministers of opposition-ruled states for their "double speak" on the issue of terrror as most of them today strongly opposed the the new draft on National Counter Terrorism Centre.
Party spokesperson Sandip Dikshit, however, downplayed the apprehensions raised over NCTC by Congress Chief Ministers from Karnataka and Maharashtra, saying it was "wrong to say that they were not on board" on the issue and were only raising some issues which the government will take care of.
"Opposition to NCTC, to my mind, is mostly political. On the one hand, you said you are with the government on the fight against Naxals. On the other hand, you oppose this. To oppose NCTC for local politics is not good.
"It only exposed their double speak. If everything is seen from the prism of politics, neither NCTC can be set up nor there will be any coordination (in the fight against Naxals)," he told reporters here.
As most of Chief Ministers of opposition-ruled states opposed NCTC at the conference on Internal Security here, Finance Minister P Chidambaram, its architect, said it was "deeply regrettable" that a few chief ministers opposed even the modified version of the National Counter Terrorism Centre.
Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra said the new draft of NCTC was a "poorly conceived" idea, while Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Raman Singh said it violated the federal structure of the Constitution.
Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar criticized it for several "serious flaws" and "arbitrary" provisions, while Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik warned against any "direct or indirect interference in the state's autonomy". West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said the proposed version of NCTC "upsets" the federal structure of the countr
Interestingly, Congress Chief Minister of Karnatka Chief Minister Siddaramamaiah also voiced reservations against the full-fledged operationalisation of NCTC saying it should not be given "unbridled powers".
