Acting on intelligence inputs, the Delhi Zonal unit of DRI late last month seized a consignment sourced from China containing fake mobile spare parts of companies like Blackberry, HTC, Samsung, etc from Indira Gandhi International (IGI) airport cargo.

The consignment, which was in the name of a Delhi-based businessman, was lying unattended for past many days, officials said.

The fake or copy of mobile spare parts were brought in 115 cartons using a fake Import Export Code (IEC) certificate issued in the name of Shakeel Siddiqui on a non-existent address in the national capital.

IEC is a unique 10 digit code issued by Director General of Foreign Trade, Ministry of Commerce to Indian Companies. IEC is mandatory for import or export in India, they said.

The goods were imported in SKD (Semi-Knocked Down) and CKD (Complete Knocked Down) conditions in an attempt to dodge the customs authorities. The CKD is one of the ways to import or export goods like a car, big electronic or electrical items in which the whole products is completely disassembled. Whereas, in SKD condition, an item is partially diassembled.

DRI officials said that the import in CKD and SKD mode is done to hide the main goods and avoid paying duties which are higher on a joint or assembled items like mobile phones than in disassembled conditions. (More)
