A 24-year-old driver of a goods vehicle was allegedly bludgeoned to death by his helper in a drunken brawl over money in central Delhi's Jhandewalan area, police said.
According to police, the deceased has been identified as Ramesh Chauhan alias Deepak.
The murder came to light early this morning when a passerby discovered a body lying in a pool of blood at the roadside near Videocon Tower in Jhandewalan.
"There were several wounds on the victim's head and face, which prima facie appeared to have been caused by a blunt object. Chauhan was the driver of a Tata-407 and worked for a transport company. He used to sleep in the vehicle," said a police official.
A case of murder has been registered in this connection at Paharganj police station.
Inquiries revealed that Chauhan was last seen yesterday with his helper, Umesh Kumar Patel, whom police found to be missing. A search was launched for Patel and he was arrested from the same area. Police also recovered an iron rod which they suspect was used in the crime.
"During interrogation, Patel told us that he was consuming liquor with Chauhan when an argument broke out between them which soon turned into a scuffle. In a fit of rage, he hit Chauhan repeatedly with an iron rod and fled the spot after the latter collapsed," he added.
Police said that the dispute between the duo had broken out over money. Both worked for the same transport company, they added.
