In a letter written to all District Magistrates, Transport Commissioner K Ravindra Naik said as per the data provided by the traffic directorate, a total of 1,200 accidents took place between January 1 and March 31 this year and 594 people were killed in the mishaps.
He said under the Central Motor Vehicle Act, it is mandatory for the driver to use helmet while riding a two-wheeler and seat belt while riding a four-wheeler.
Naik said if this provision is implemented effectively, the number of accidents could be reduced.
The Commissioner suggested it should be ensured that fuel is not supplied to the commuters unless they adhere to the provision of wearing seat belt and helmet.
