Drug peddler dies in Central jail

A notorious drug peddler died under mysterious circumstances in the Central jail here today, a senior jail official said.
Sukhdeep Singh alias Bobby, a resident of border village Pakiva under Kalanaur police station in the district, was found dead in his Barrack number 4, in the jail early this morning, Jail Superintendent D K Sidhu, said.
Sukhdeep's sister Happy, a resident of Daburji village near here, alleged that jail authorities used to beat him and her brother had shown an injury mark on his back to her when she had met him in jail yesterday.
However, Sidhu denied any such charge and further said that a medical board has been constituted to conduct post mortem examination of the deceased to ascertain exact cause of death.
Sukhdeep was lodged in the central jail here since November 11 last year when police in Batala had arrested him along with his two accomplices under NDPS and Arms Act.
Police had earlier said that they had recovered a double barrel gun and 400 grams of heroin from him on November 8 last year.
Prior to this, Sukhdeep was earlier was arrested by Border Security Force from a border area here with 15 kg heroin in 2013, but he had escaped from the police custody when he was going to be produced in a court at Batala on April 16, 2013.
Police had registered nine cases under the NDPS Act in different police stations in Batala and Gurdaspur districts against him.
