The administration has constituted teams which will monitor the implementation of the rule, District Magistrate Kaushal Raj Sharma said, adding, those violating them shall face "strict disciplinary action".
The DM, while announcing the ban, noted that drying of animal skins on the banks of the river leads to pollution.
The Pollution Control Board has been given strict instructions to take action against the tannery owners who fail to comply with the order, Sharma said.
The administration also ordered to demolish any illegal construction within 500 metre of the river bank and asked to ensure water generated from tanneries doesn't fall into it.
The tannery owners here dry unprocessed leather and illegally run distilleries on the bank of the Ganga.
