Delhi State Cancer Institute (DSCI) is all set to get a PET scan machine, a hi-tech gadget used for cancer diagnosis which is available in the city only at AIIMS, Army's Research and Referral Hospital and few other private hospitals.
"DSCI now has a PET scan machine, which uses full body scan-technique for diagnosis. It will be inaugurated tomorrow. This scan currently costs Rs 20,000-25,000 and with this facility people could get the test done for Rs 5,000," a spokesperson of DSCI said today.
Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia and Health Minister Satyendar Jain are scheduled to inaugurate the new facility tomorrow at the hospital premises in Dilshad Garden area.
"Our hospital will become the first government hospital to have such a facility. So far, it has been available at places like AIIMS, Army's Research and Referral Hospital and few other private hospitals," the spokesperson said.
PET (positron emission tomography) scan is an imaging test that allows doctors to check for diseases in the body by using a special dye that has radioactive tracers.
The spokesperson said "so far we have got just one machine but efforts would be to get more in future".
Since, the scan facility would be available much cheaper, it is likely to benefit the poor population, who cannot afford costly diagnosis tests in AIIMS or private hospitals.
