Delhi University today decided to put on hold its decision to "adopt" the recent UGC amendments, including those relating to workload, recruitment and promotions, which the teachers claim will leave around 4,000 ad-hoc faculty members jobless.
The decision was taken at a meeting of the Academic Council, the statutory body of the varsity.
The AC met to discuss UGC notifications and recommendations of a Vice Chancellor-appointed committee on the issue of appointment and promotion of teachers in colleges and departments.
"The AC accepted the teachers' demand to defer the decision to accept UGC notifications. The Council agreed to expand the committee studying the amendments and consider its recommendations," an AC member said.
Teachers have been protesting since the announcement was made and had even boycotted the evaluation process last year.
The agenda of the meeting was to "consider a proposal to adopt the UG notification regarding minimum qualification for appointment of teachers and other academic staff".
In May, the Vice-Chancellor had appointed a three-member committee to look into the issue of appointments.
