The two-day conference, co-convened by the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs and DP World, will be held here from tomorrow.
This year the theme of the conference is 'Securing State Recovery: Sustaining Momentum at Sea, Confronting Instability on Land', with the focus of the international community now moving to build Somalia's economy and infrastructure to provide long term solutions for the country.
The conference will also hold discussions on issues related to current maritime piracy issues, including assessments of international, regional and local efforts in mitigating piracy off the Horn of Africa, the correlation between crime on the continent and piracy, and the industry's efforts to halt it.
The UAE Counter-Piracy Conference is part of a UAE Counter-Piracy Week, which begins with the first ever meeting in the region of the Contact Group on Piracy off the Coast of Somalia (CGPCS).
CGPCS was established in 2009 following UN Security Council Resolution 1851, and includes Ambassador-level officials from more than 80 countries, international organizations, shipping industry and seafarer associations.
The UAE, as co-chair, with Japan and the Seychelles, of the Working Group 'Maritime Counter-Piracy and Mitigation Operations' is hosting the first-ever meeting of this Working Group.
