The Delhi Urban Shelter Improvement Board (DUSIB) today said it has decided to provide sanitation and toilet facilities to all slum dwellers in the national capital.
Chief Executive Officer of DUSIB, Amar Nath, said that the board has planned to provide sanitation facilities, upgrade existing toilets and build new toilets with modern technologies in the slum clusters.
"It is the mandate of DUSIB to rehabilitate slum (jhuggi- jhopri) dwellers and provide toilets facilities in jhuggi- jhopri (JJ) clusters," Nath said in a release here.
Referring to the speech by Finance Minister Arun Jaitley while presenting the Delhi budget, Nath said he had also made an announcement that toilets would be provided in slums and JJ clusters.
Nath further said that DUSIB and other government agencies have provided toilet facilities in 685 JJ clusters, which are standing on land owned by various state and central government agencies.
"The board has taken over community toilets from municipal corporations and is in the process of upgrading them. There are a large number of slums where there are no toilets," he said, adding that the board plans to spend about Rs 42 crore this year on building new toilets and improving existing ones.
Nath said that the board is also planning to provide 67 mobile toilet vans with bio-digesters in 53 JJ clusters where there is space constraint.
He said that an advisory committee to suggest sanitation strategies for slums, comprising NGOs and experts, has been constituted.
"The committee will help DUSIB formulate frameworks of various strategies to be implemented with the involvement of stakeholders working in the field of sanitation," he said.
