The Public Works Department (PWD) today requested the Delhi Police to relax traffic norms of its tankers engaged in spraying water on roads to reduce dust pollution in the capital.
According to the department, presently as per the traffic restriction, these tankers are deployed between 11 AM to 4 PM only and each tanker on an average can make two trips.
"Joint Commissioner (Traffic)has been requested for relaxation of traffic norms for operation of tankers so that they could be used for more time to settle down dust on roads," said a senior government official.
Following directions from Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal last week, the PWD launched a "massive" dust control operations to combat air pollution.
Department said that to control dust pollution footpaths, kerbs and central edges are being washed using water jets through tankers and for this purpose 54 tankers were today deployed on arterial roads.
Pace of horticulture activity has been improved. Bald patches at green spaces on central verges and footpaths are unable to hold top soil which contributes to air pollution. These are being repaired, the official said.
