An earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 5.6 has struck a town in southern Iran near a nuclear power plant.
The US Geological Survey says the temblor struck today afternoon some 14 kilometres northeast of Borazjan town. That town is some 48 kilometres north of the port city of Bushehr, home of the Bushehr nuclear power plant.
A report about the earthquake by the official IRNA news agency gave no details about casualties nor if there was any damage. In April, a 6.1-magnitude earthquake killed at least 37 people and injured hundreds in a town near Bushehr. The nuclear plant wasn't damaged then.
Iran sits on a series of faults. It experiences minor quakes once a day on average.
