EC teams seize liquor, drugs & unaccounted cash in Nagaland

Liquor, drugs and unaccounted cash amounting to Rs 2.96 crore have been seized from different parts of Nagaland since the model code of conduct came into effect in the state, a top state election official said Friday.

Election to the lone Lok Sabha seat in Nagaland and byelection to the Aonglenden Assembly constituency will be held on April 11.

The seizure is a consolidated figure till April 5 since enforcement of the Model Code of Conduct for the dual polls in the state, said Chief Electoral Officer Nagaland, Abhijit Sinha.

Total cash seizure is 89,58,240, which include Rs 72.10 lakh by Income Tax Department and Rs 17,48,240 by Flying Squad (FS), Static Surveillance Team (SST) and Police force, Sinha said.

A total of 61,624.93 litres of liquor amounting to Rs 1,72,40,923.583 have been seized till date by the team, including Excise Department.

Assorted drugs, including heroin, ganja, brown sugar, cough syrup amounting to Rs 34,14,435 have also been confiscated during the period, he said.

He said that since March 13, two persons have been injured and properties worth Rs 10,000 have damaged in election related violence.

Four candidates are in fray for the lone Lok Sabha seat in Nagaland. They are INC nominee K L Chishi, PDA consensus candidate and NDPP nominee Tokheho Yepthomi, NPPs Hayithung Tungoe and Independent Dr M M Thromwa Konyak.

The Aonglenden Assembly by-poll will witness a straight fight between Congress candidate Alemjongshi and Sharingain Longkumer of ruling NDPP.
