EC to publish draft electoral rolls in Tamil Nadu tomorrow

A total of 65,648 persons were added to the electoral rolls after the general elections in April this year

The Election Commission has announced special summary revision of electoral rolls of Assembly constituencies of Tamil Nadu with reference to January 1, 2015 as the qualifying date.

The draft rolls would be published tomorrow in all districts in the designated locations and also be hosted on Election Commission's website, Chief Electoral Officer Praveen Kumar said here today.

Speaking to reporters he said a total of 65,648 persons were added to the electoral rolls after the general elections in April this year and another 10,389 were deleted from the rolls during the same period upon application.

"We suo motu deleted 2,26,512 persons from the rolls on account of address change and other reasons, a total of 2,36,901 persons were deleted from the rolls, making the total number of electors in the state 5,48,71,374 as of today," he said.

The electorate has maximum number of women at 2,74,47,173 followed by 2,74,21,074 men and 3,127 third gender, he added.

Those above 18 years and intending to add their names in the rolls could apply between October 15 and November 10 this year and their names would appear in the final rolls, which would be released on January 1, 2015.

The EC would also organise special campaigns on October 26 and November 2 in respective polling stations. Electors can also send an SMS to 9444123456 with their EPIC number to find out in which constituency they have a vote, Kumar added.

On the vacancy in Srirangam constituency,which has arisen after the conviction and jailing of AIADMK chief Jayalalithaa in a disproportionate assets case, Kumar said "As per the law, elections are to be held in six months after the vacancy. The Assembly Secretary has not notified the vacancy to us. I have informed the Election Commission about the situation in which the vacancy has arisen. So we have time and so let's not ask any hypothetical questions."
