East Delhi Municipal Commissioner Mohanjeet Singh said the MoU has been signed by the East Delhi Municipal Corporation, Union Ministry of Urban Development, Union Ministry of Road Transport and Highways and National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) for reclamation of the landfill site and use of the municipal solid waste for construction purposes.
All parties have agreed for mining, excavation and collection of the waste located at the dumpsite covering an area of about 29.62 hectares, he said.
He said the capacity of Ghazipur landfill site to accept municipal waste was exhausted in the year 2002 and now it stands about 50 m above the ground level, posing a health hazard.
Singh said EDMC would dispose off recovered materials which can't be used for road construction.
"EDMC would also collect the leachate generated from the project on a daily basis and transport it for its processing and disposal to sewage plant located at Ghazipur. After the completion of the project, NHAI will return the vacant Ghazipur dumpsite area to EDMC." he added,
