Educationist B M Hegde selected for Dr Y Nayudamma gold medal

Educationist and former Vice-Chancellor of Manipal University Professor B M Hegde has been selected for the prestigious Dr Y Nayudamma Gold Medal for this year.
Hegde, a Padma Bhushan awardee and cardiologist, would be conferred the award during the National Seminar on 'Frontiers in Science and Technology' being organised by Telangana Academy of Sciences (TAS) at National Geophysical Research Institute here on June 23, TAS president Ch Mohan Rao told reporters here today.
Department of Science and Technology (DST) Secretary Prof Ashutosh Sharma will deliver the Y Nayudamma Memorial Lecture on 'Delights of Doing Research: Some Personal Lessons from Translational Nanoscience'.
The award was instituted in 1986 in the memory of global leather scientist and former Director General of CSIR, Yelavarthy Nayudamma. The award is given annually to persons chosen for their significant contributions to the development of science and technology in the country.
Telangana Academy of Sciences, which was formed after bifurcation of Andhra Pradesh, has about 250 fellows and this year 30 scientists and professors are elected as Fellows of the Academy, he said.
The Telangana Academy of Sciences will soon organise the 'TAS Science Congress' which is likely to be held in August or September.
"We are approaching Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao to inaugurate 'TAS Science Congress'," Rao said.
The Academy, set up with the objective of promoting science, will soon hold a convention for young women scientists besides planning to start mobile laboratories which will be stationed in every mandal headquarters to enable students from rural areas to utilise the facility and will also give away gold medals to young scientists working in the rural regions, Rao added.
