Egypt court sentences 24 Brotherhood members to life in prison
Press Trust of India Cairo An Egyptian court today sentenced 24 Muslim Brotherhood members to life imprisonment for setting a police station on fire in upper Egypt's Assuit Governorate.
The court acquitted another 141 defendants in the same case of torching Al-Ghanayem Police Station last year.
After the judgment was delivered, the defendants shouted slogans against the Egyptian police.
Since Islamist ex-president Mohamed Morsi's ouster last year, the Egyptian government has been cracking down on the Muslim Brotherhood and its supporters.
Thousands of Brotherhood members and loyalists Morsi have been arrested over the past year on numerous charges, including inciting and committing violence against their opponents.
Morsi himself is currently in prison over charges of killing peaceful protesters, espionage, escaping from prison during the January 25 Revolution in 2011, insulting the judiciary and he was recently charged of spying and handing documents of national security importance to Qatari intelligence through the Qatar-based Al-Jazeera news channel.
He has not been sentenced in any case so far.
