Journalists in Egypt have held a one-day strike, demanding that security forces protect reporters covering protests and demanding that their employers provide protection as their job grows increasingly dangerous.
On the steps of the journalists' syndicate in downtown Cairo, dozens of reporters and photographers yelled slogans today and carried banners bearing the words: "Stop killing journalists."
The strike comes a week after a young journalist was killed in Egypt while covering clashes at a protest by Muslim Brotherhood supporters.
Journalists have been casualties in Egypt's tumultuous past three years and sometimes a target of authorities as part of a broader crackdown on dissent.
Dozens of journalists have been jailed, including some from Al-Jazeera, for being seen as sympathetic to the Brotherhood and toppled Islamist President Mohammed Morsi.
