Eight killed in road mishap in Odisha, CM annuonces ex-gratia

A head-on collision between a truck and an auto-rickshaw here claimed the lives of eight passengers and left two critically injured.
The victims were returning to Machhagaon after attending ceremonial 'Snana Purnima' ritual of Lord Jagannath at Nemala when the auto-rickshaw in which they were travelling collided head on against the truck at Chandol near here, Inspector in-Charge of Jagatsinghpur police station Rajnikant Mishra said.
While seven persons, including a teenager, died on the spot, another succumbed to injuries at the hospital.
The injured were taken to the district headquarters hospital and then shifted to SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack as their condition deteriorated, the IIC said.
The truck driver is absconding and efforts are on to trace him, he added.
Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik announced Rs two lakh each ex-gratia to the families of each dead and free medical treatment to the injured in the mishap, official sources said.
