Eight vehicles set on fire at police battalion premises

Unidentified persons set ablaze eight vehicles parked inside a high security police battalion premises at Goeragre village in Meghalaya's West Garo Hills district, police said today.
The incident took place at the headquarters of the 2nd Meghalaya Police Battalion around midnight last night at Georagre which is a about 13 km from the district headquarters, Tura.
"As many as five new police vehicles and three two wheelers were damaged in the incident which took place at the premises of the battalion," battalion commandant H Toi told PTI.
He said the incident took place at around midnight and after an alarm was raised, nearby vehicles were saved from the fire.
The arsonists had targeted the motor transport branch of the battalion which is at the base of the battalion office in which about seven vehicles were parked and a number of two wheelers, the officer said.
Director General of Police S B Singh said the police has taken note of the incident and an inquiry is being initiated.
"This is a very serious issue involving security and we have ordered for a thorough investigation. Preliminary indications appear to reveal it to be an inside job. We are probing all angles," he said.
