Eighteen UNLF operatives convicted and sentenced in Assam
Press Trust of India Guwahati A special NIA court today convicted and sentenced to prison 18 operatives of a banned North East group UNLF, including its self-styled 'chairman', on charges of perpetrating terrorist activities and waging war against the government.
The case dates back to April, 2010 when the National Investigation Agency (NIA) registered a case and conducted searches here and arrested Khundong Tomba alias Bikramjiot and Y Nabichand alias Abo alias Dilip of the group United National Liberation Front (UNLF).
"Eighteen persons have been convicted for the offences and have been sentenced to rigorous imprisonment ranging from 7-10 years by a NIA special court in Guwahati," the agency said.
It said as part of the investigation, "NIA and Assam Police arrested 20 more members of the banned terrorist organisation UNLF who were involved in terrorist conspiracy in the states of Manipur and Assam. Evidence has been brought on record by the agency to establish that the said proscribed organisation indulged in large scale extortion from government officials, recruitment of cadres, purchase of arms and ammunition, for waging war against the government."
NIA had also arrested UNLF 'chairman' Raj Kumar Meghen alias Sanayama in the case and it later filed two charge sheets in the case. Meghen has also been convicted today.
A total of 25 people were charged for their involvement in terrorist conspiracy and for waging war against the government. Out of these, seven are absconding, the agency said.
