Rajesh Shah (60), a retired government employee, and his wife Jyotikaben (56), a primary school teacher, set themselves on fire with kerosene in the wee hours, police said.
Shah, who served as an officer in the state social welfare department, had retired two years ago.
The couple used to live in an apartment in Kaka Ni Pol locality and are survived by a son who lives in Ahmedabad, police said.
"While Shah died instantly, Jyotikaben was rushed to Ahmedabad civil hospital where she breathed her last," said a police officer.
