Three persons were arrested for allegedly cheating an elderly woman over Rs five lakh posing as insurance agents in Salt Lake, the police said.
Acting on a complaint of septuagenarian Niva Banerjee, a resident of Purbachal Housing in Salt Lake, Bidhannagar Police nabbed Raju Sil, Samiran Dey and Omshankar Mandal last night, a senior officer said.
Banerjee, widow of Late Bankim Chandra Chatterjee, got a call from an insurance agent, Raju Sil, asking for enrolling for a new policy this March.
The 72-year-old told Sil she was quite old for a new policy, but if he could help her getting the money from the policies her late husband had enrolled for.
Getting a hint that there could be a huge amount of money, Sil took the residential address of Banerjee and visited her house a few days later.
"Sil along with Dey visited the old lady's house and convinced her that because her late husband had life insurance policies against his name and she was the nominee, she will get a healthy amount which she can further use for other new short-term policies.
