Expressing concern over rising crime against children and women, members in the Rajya Sabha today demanded more stringent laws to punish culprits and stressed the need for social reforms.
During Zero Hour in the Upper House, Congress members Rajani Patel and Viplove Thakur said children and women in the country are not safe despite many laws to protect them and called for more strict laws to punish culprits.
While Patel observed that the country has "many laws but still children are not safe", Thakur pitched for social reforms saying crimes against women cannot be stopped through laws alone.
Both of them called for stringent laws to curb child and women sexual abuse.
Thakur said the issue cannot be left to state governments and the Centre need to take more pro-active steps to create awareness to empower women.
Referring to rape of six-year-old child in a elite school in Bangalore, Rajeev Chandrashekar (Independent) said strict action should be taken against the culprit and school management should be made accountable.
