'Electric arc furnace to help meet 300 mn tonne steel output'

Steel Minister Chaudhary Birender Singh today said the use of electric arc furnace in steel manufacturing will help in achieving the 300 million tonnes production target.
Singh also said that his ministry is encouraging steel makers to use such technologies in manufacturing.
"We are encouraging the use of Induction Furnace and Electric Arc Furnace technologies for steel making, which will be key in the success of our mission to #MakeInSteel for #MakeInIndia, helping us move towards achieving steel output of 300 Million Tonne by 2030-31," Singh said in a tweet.
Steel is produced through two ways by using blast furnace and electric arc furnace.

The carbon emission is also low when steel is produced through electric arc furnace route, besides the cost of production is lower as compared to the use of blast furnace route, the All India Induction Furnaces Association (AIIFA) Secretary General Kamal Agarwal said.
"The use of scrap and much lesser energy for steel production with induction furnaces and electric arc furnaces shall be a giant leap towards environment protection," the minister said in another tweet.
Speaking at a conference last week, Singh had assured all possible support to the secondary steel sector, which uses an eco-friendly electric furnace to produce the commodity.

The secondary steel sector has enough potential in terms of production and job creation, the minister said, adding that his ministry will take steps to address all issues of the industry.
