Carcass of a female elephant with patches of flesh ripped away was recovered at Hukani Veruni adjacent to the Kaziranga National Park in Assam today.
The carcass was found by local people on the edge of the Park's Agoratoli Range and they informed the authorities.
KNP authorities said that the elephant was suspected to have been injured in a fight with other pachyderms about three to four days ago and strayed to the edge of the World Heritage Site.
Due to its bleeding injury, forest department sources said tigers bit away chunks of its flesh leading to the elephant's death.
The evidence of tigers biting away its flesh was apparent in the bite marks on the mammoth and pug marks on the ground, they added.
