Elephants injure three in Assam

At last three persons were injured and standing crops on a vast field damaged by elephants in separate incidents in Assam, official sources said today.
The three persons identified as Abdul Ali (35), Akbar Ali (30) and Norsat Ali (36) were seriously injured by an elephant at Baghmari in Sonitpur district yesterday. All three were admitted to the Gauhati Medical College Hospital.
The All Assam Minority Students Union today blocked NH-52 for two hours demanding protection to villagers in Biswanath Chariali area.
In another incident, a herd of 60 elephants damaged crops and sugarcane farmland and some temporary houses besides killing some cows at Bacheria yesterday, Divisional Forest Officer of Sonitpur West Division, Narayan Mahanta said.
He said forest officials rushed to the spot today to guide the herd back to the forest.
