Eleven persons, who were sentenced
to death for killing a woman over a land dispute, have filed appeals before the Calcutta High court challenging a sessions court judgement.
"Appeals against the judgement (of Nadia sessions court) have been filed," their counsel Sekhar Basu said here today.
The matter is likely to be moved before a High Court bench soon.
Sessions judge Partha Sarathi Mukhopadhyay had on February 4 awarded the capital punishment to the 11 for shooting to death Aparna Bag on November 23, 2014. One accused Manabesh Biswas is absconding.
Aparna was killed when a person called Lankeshwar Ghosh, along with his gang, tried to seize 21 bigha and 15 cottah of land at Ghungragachhi under Krishnaganj block, which belongs to Refugee and Refugee Rehabilitation Department of West Bengal government.
The land was being tilled by 55 families for long and they claimed to have its posession.

On November 23, 2014, Lankeswar Ghosh, along with his men, appeared on the field on a tractor and tried to take over the land by force before facing resistance by the tillers.
In the clash that broke out, there was firing and three women received bullet injuries. Aparna Bag was hit on her chest and died. Two other women Shyamali Tarafdar and Latika Tarafdar were also hit. A student Rajiv Mondal too was hit by a bullet on his leg.
The three, however, recovered later.
The 11 sentenced to death were Lankeswar Ghosh, Palash Ghosh, Sanat Ghosh, Shyamal Ghosh, Jhantu Ghosh, Goutam Ghosh, Paresh Ghosh, Joydeb Ghosh, Nepal Ghosh, Rajkumar Ghosh and Basu Ghosh.
