A special court today sentenced an office assistant of the Madurai District Employment Exchange and his wife to five years imprisonment in a disproportionate assets case.
The Prevention of Corruption-Special court Judge, Mathura Sekaran, also slapped a fine of Rs one lakh each on Kannan and his wife.
Directorate of Vigilance and Anti Corruption (DVAC) case was that Kannan had amassed assets to the tune of Rs 23 lakh in 2012, which were disproportionate to known sources of his income.
DVAC said he had amassed the wealth by helping job-seekers registered with the employment exchange, getting them out-of- turn promotions for seniority and also interviews for government jobs.
Kannan had bought the assets in the name of his wife Amutha, they said.
The judge also ordered DVAC to confiscate the property of the office assistant and hand it over to the government.
