India's achievement in bringing nearly 1.4 million women leaders into 'panchayats' and its sustained efforts to ensure empowerment of the fairer sex were highlighted at a global meet of women parliaments in Addis Ababa today.
Speaking at the meet, BJP MP Tarun Vijay elaborated on India's stride in empowerment of women and mentioned various initiatives by the government in this regard.
Talking about crimes against women, he said countries across the world, including the UK and the US, were facing the problem and Indian government was determined to address the challenge.
"We too are fighting this menace with determination in India. Let's fight together and forge a universal solidarity. Women must also be protected from savagery of terrorism and extremism," he said.
Parliamentarians from several countries have participated in the summit.
Vijay also listed Narendra Modi government's various initiatives including the Jan Dhan scheme, saying they were aimed at ensuring empowerment of women.
"India leads with highest no of micro-level women members of gram panchayats -- 1.4 million, I am happy to come to this august forum at a time when we are having the highest no of women MPs post-independence and the highest no of women ministers," Vijay said.
He also highlighted Prime Minister Narendra Modi's campaign to build 12 million toilets helping girls and women.
