Encephalitis toll rises to 206, hospital principal suspended

As the death toll due to encephalitis rose to 206 today, North Bengal Medical College and Hospital (NBMCH) principal Anup Kumar Roy was suspended for alleged deriliction of duty.
West Bengal Health Services Director Biswaranjan Satpathy said Roy was suspended.
During the day, four deaths due to different types of encephalitis were reported from parts of the state in the last 24 hours taking the toll in the state since January to 206.
"In the last 24 hours, four deaths have been reported. Among them, two were from north Bengal and two from Murshidabad and another from Bishnupur," Satpathy told PTI.

In north Bengal, one person from Cooch Behar district died at Siliguri District Hospital while another, from Dakshin Dinajpur district, died at Balurghat Hospital due to Acute Encephalitis (AES), Satpathy said.
The other two persons who died due to the disease were from Murshidabad and Bishnupur, he added.
