General manager of Southern Railway R K Kulshresthra Thursday presented cash awards and merit certificates to an engine driver and his assistant for averting a rail mishap.
On November 5, a goods train with M Arun Kumar and Aseem S Hameed was passing through Kagankarai in the Jolarpet-Salem section when they felt a jerk, a press release said.
Kumar immediately stopped the train, scrutinised the tracks and checked the train formation before alerting the Kagankarai station master and section engineers, the release said.
Upon inspection, a weld failure was noticed and a speed restriction imposed in the section, it said.
Later, the fault was set right and rail traffic restored, the release said.
In recognition of the timely action, the general manager presented the Kumar and Hameed with cash awards and merit certification for their presence of mind which averted a probable mishap, it said.
