The Tamil Nadu government today informed Madras High Court that Environmental Clearance has been granted to the interlinking of Tamiraparani-Karumeniyar- Nambiar rivers in Tirunelveli and Tuticorin districts.
This was stated in a counter affidavit filed by the Public Works Department Secretary on a PIL by former MLA M Appavu of Radhapuram Taluk in Tirunelveli district.
The affidavit was filed before the first bench comprising Chief Justice Sanjay Kishan Kaul and Justice TS Sivagnanam.
The petitioner has sought the formation of a flood-carrier canal from Kannadian Channel to drought prone area of Sathankulam, Thisaiyanvilai by interlinking the two rivers to prevent flow of 13-tmc of water into sea every year.
He prayed to the court to direct the state government to implement the project in a time-bound manner.
