Authorities in Honduras say an environmental and indigenous rights activist has been killed. It's at least the second such case this year.
The Public Ministry said today in a statement that it had opened an investigation into the murder of 49-year-old Lesbia Janeth Urquia.
Authorities say Urquia's body was found yesterday in a garbage dump in Marcala, about 100 miles (160 kilometers) west of Tegucigalpa. She had disappeared Tuesday afternoon after going out to ride her bicycle.
The indigenous rights group with which Urquia was affiliated calls her death a "political femicide." In says Urquia was an indigenous leader and outspoken activist against hydroelectric projects in the La Paz region.
Urquia's death comes four months after the killing of internationally recognized environmental activist Berta Caceres.
