Noted environmentalist Kaushal Kishore Jaiswal today demanded an immediate ban on all mining activities in the hills and forest areas of Jharkhand to withstand effects of cyclones like Hudhud.
Plateaus like Chotanagpur can withstand the intensity of cyclones as long as mining activities are not allowed there, Jaiswal said explaining why Cyclone Hudhud did not have any impact in the Chotanagpur plateau of Jharkhand.
Jaiswal, who is also the President of Universal Environment Conservation Expedition, an organisation working for conservation of environment, said large-scale mining activities in the Himalayan range have resulted in frequent landslides due to loosening of soil.
An activist of Sunderlal Bahuguna-led 'Chipko Andolan', Jaiswal, who launched the 'Van Bandhan' (to tie Rakhi to trees) aimed to protest forest in the country, has authored several books on environmental issues.
Jaiswal has devoted himself to the cause of expanding green cover in Palamau region of Jharkhand. His mission is to save trees and take up a plantation drive to bring greenery to this drought-prone region.
