Subhash Chandra-promoted Essel group will soon start work with state-run telecom firm BSNL as virtual network operator (VNO) for broadband services.

"We have signed a memorandum of understanding with Essel Group in presence of Essel Group Chairman Subhash Chandra. One of the area is VNO where Essel will set up its infrastructure and work with us as a VNO for broadband services," BSNL Chairman and Managing Director Anupam Shrivastava told PTI.

A VNO can lease bandwidth from operators to sell voice and data services to customers, like a retailer, under its own brand name. VNOs are allowed to provide own billing plans.

Under the agreement, Essel Group would partner with BSNL in new emerging area of smart city where government has declared a plan throughout 100 cities across the country.

"This is one more step toward "Digital India". We are glad to know that Shri Subhash Chandra has taken oath as Member of Parliament today with this his role and contribution to serve the country and enhance immensely," Shrivastava said.

Essel Group, which runs multiple channels under Zee brand, has expressed interest to deliver content it owns, to broadband and mobile user of BSNL.

"In addition to this they would like to use BSNL broadband network to deliver their DTH customer base video on demand service," Shrivastava said.
