An array of events will be held here tomorrow to mark 100 years of the arrival of Mahatma Gandhi to India from South Africa.
After over 21 years stay in South Africa, Gandhi arrived in Mumbai on January 9, 1915 and a small launch bearing some of Mumbai's prominent citizens had set off from the newly built Gateway of India to greet the 'SS Arabia', a mail boat, which ferried Gandhi.
Gandhi returned to India with his wife Kasturba.
He had been in London the previous year to treat a severe bout of pleurisy, a lung inflammation. His doctors advised him to return to India to escape the English winter. And this time, India became his permanent home.
To mark the momentous occasion, Mumbai Sarvoday Mandal has organised various programmes beginning tomorrow with a rally from Radio Club to Mumbai University convocation hall in South Mumbai.
The procession will have college students and people dressed as Gandhiji and Kasturba, TRK Somaiya of the Mandal, told PTI.
