The play within a play is a witty story about love and marriage and and revolves around playwright Henry who is married to Charlotte, an actress starring in his play but is in love with Annie, the activist wife of Charlotte's co-star Max.
McGregor will play Henry in the Tony-award-winning revival while the casting of other roles will be announced at a later date.
The play is being produced by Roundabout Theatre Company, the play will be directed by Sam Gold.
McGregor recently finished shooting 'Jane's Got a Gun' and is currently filming 'Mortdecai' opposite Johnny Depp and Gwyneth Paltrow.
He'll next be seen on the big screen in John Wells' film adaptation of Tracy Letts' Pulitzer and Tony Award-winning play 'August: Osage County', set for a December release, according to Broadway World.
Stoppard's 'The Real Thing' premiered on November 16, 1982 at The Strand Theatre in London. The Real Thing is the winner of the 1984 Tony Award for Best Play and returns on Broadway stage after 14 years.
