A district court today convicted a former office-bearer of an agriculture marketing board and sentenced him to seven-year imprisonment for raping his maid in 2011.
Judge S S Bhishma held Kuldeep Gawande, former chief of Daryapur Agriculture Produce Marketing Committee (APMC), guilty under various sections of IPC for rape.
The court also imposed fine of Rs 50,000 on Gawande. He will have to spend three more months in jail if he failed to pay the amount.
The incident occurred on March 8, 2011 when Gawande called his domestic help to his bedroom and raped her while his daughters were sleeping in different rooms.
Gawande had also lodged a false complaint of theft against the victim, police had said.
The court examined four witnesses in the trial and also relied on circumstantial evidence against Gawande, who runs a school in the city.
